Re: your up to date torrent report |
Hey Jody - Once in the torrent world, will the sharing part slow my performace here? I'm on DSL.
Dl'ing files slows all who share my wireless, does sharing via bt do the same thing? Particularly the outgoing stuff?

Re: your up to date torrent report |
Not quite sure I u/stand the question. What do mean by here? I am not wireless, but I have dsl. The only time I ever an effect on speed or performance is if I have 3 shows downloading at once while my daughter has her IM on and shes working on a Word document. If the other computers in the house are on the same wireless connection, and each of you have 2-3 things going at once, I assume it would be like me having 6-7 windows open/running at once on my computer. Is that an answer to your question? I'm really not very technically inclined.

Re: your up to date torrent report |
OK. I think that does answer the q. When I'm dl'ing via my dsl, all things internet(email, browser, print-share, steaming LMA) move at a snails pace. So, I must dl when it won't effect our businesses.
The difference in with bt, you have info going 2 ways correct? So, I assume even if I am not dl'ing but helping 'seed'(?) a show, the outgoing data may slow me down as well. Which may be a problem for me...

Re: your up to date torrent report |
With DSL you have a download speed and an upload speed. Your RJ-11 (telephone wire coming into your house) has four wires - two are used for voice to transmit and receive. The other two are dormant unless you have DSL then they are used for download and upload. Upload is ALWAYS slower for obvious reasons. Your upload should not affect your download.
You share your DSL connection with your neighbors. You all share a "trunk" from the local CO (Central Office) which is the closest central phone company Hub to your neighborhood. The more people in your neighborhood with DSL and the more that are on, the slower the connection.
IOW: 5pm to 10pm are not the best times to be on because everyone is on. Thats why you can seem to have bursts of shows being downloaded over night - no one is on. (Unless your neighbor gets his jollies in the wee hours)
Hope this helps.

Re: your up to date torrent report |
Thanks deadmax. Yes, I'm prepared to switch to cable. 5 years ago when I got DSL it was fast because few in my area had it. No more. It doesn't just seem slower, IT IS!
So cable, here I come. Someday soon, I'm certain...

Deadmax- you need to chime in more often as you possess knowledge most of us (certainly me)lack. If you see us stumbling around with technically threatening issues, feel free to take the lead.

Re: your up to date torrent report |
tiger ... read this somewhere recently ... don't know if it was here on the forum or at one of the bit torrent sites. But DIME prunes it's userbase at midnight Saturday. The site will be down while the process is ongoing, but once it's up again, there should be some slots opened up. Good luck!
I cannot personally verify this, but it's worth a try, right?
Addendum: actually, now that i think about it, i b'lieve DIME is down every night just after midnight for database maintainance ... so no need to wait until Sat.

Re: your up to date torrent report |
Was not aware of a cap, but the advice shared regarding Sat night sounds like a good start. If so inclined, I assume there is a moderater that might be contacted about the specifics- maybe a waiting list. My guess is that it might weed out leechers who show little or no upload rates proportionate to their download rates. It does have a tracking mechanism for each user.
